INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
midterm exam review

1 - What is the main role of human resources? Please explain.
The role of human resources is all the process of employing people, training them,
compensating them, developing policies relating to the workplace, and developing strategies
to retain employees.

2 - Explain the seven main responsibilities of HRM managers.
1. Staffing: it involves the entire hiring process and there are 4 main steps.
● Development of a staffing plan (to see how many people they should hire based on
revenue expectations)
● Development of policies to encourage multiculturalism at work (since we now have
many more people from a variety of backgrounds)
● Recruitment (finding the people to fill the open positions)
● Selection (interviewing and selection process - this step is followed by training,
retention, and motivation)
2. Setting policies: recognizing the need for a policy or a change of policy, seeking opinions
on it, writing the policy, and then communicating it to the employees.
● Discipline process policy
● Vacation time policy
● Dress code
● Ethics policy
● Internet usage policy
3. Compensation and Benefits: determination of compensations (“rewards” employees
receive for their work) that are fair, meet industry standards, and are high enough to entice
people to work for the organization. This often means setting up pay systems that take into
consideration the number of years with the organization, years of experience, education, and
similar aspects.

● 401(k) (retirement plans)
● Stock purchase plans

● Poor workplace environment
5. Training: making sure the new employees are trained to do their job and the recurring
employees continue to grow and develop new skills in their job.
● Job skills training, such as how to run a particular computer program
● Training on communication
● Team-building activities
● Policy and legal training, such as sexual harassment training and ethics training
6. Employment Laws: always be aware of all the laws that affect the workplace, keep track of
the changes taking place in the legal environment and then communicate them to the entire
management organization.
● Discrimination laws
● Health-care requirements
● Compensation requirements such as the minimum wage
● Worker safety laws
● Labor laws
7. Worker Protection: ensure worker safety in the workplace by being aware of worker
protection requirements and making sure the workplace is meeting both federal and union
standards.
● Chemical hazards
● Heating and ventilation requirements
● Use of “no fragrance” zones
● Protection of private employee information
