Assignment 3 2025
, Assignment 3
QUESTION 1
i. Curriculum 2005 (C2005)
C2005 was introduced in 1997 to redress the legacy of apartheid education. It
was based on Outcomes-Based Education (OBE) and aimed to promote a
learner-centred, activity-based, and integrated approach to teaching and
learning. However, it faced criticism due to its complexity and lack of teacher
readiness (Department of Education, 2009).
ii. The Revised National Curriculum Statement (RNCS)
In response to the challenges of C2005, the RNCS was launched in 2002. It
simplified and clarified learning outcomes and assessment standards for Grades
R–9, providing more structured guidance to teachers (Department of Basic
Education, 2011).
iii. The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) Grades R–12
Before CAPS was implemented, the NCS Grades R–12 was developed to ensure
coherence and progression across the entire school system. It consolidated the
curriculum, promoted core values, and introduced assessment standards to
guide teaching and learning (DBE, 2011).
QUESTION 2
According to the National Curriculum Statement Grades R–12 (Department of Basic
Education, 2011, p. 4), the curriculum aims to develop learners who are:
i. Confident and independent thinkers – able to express themselves and
engage with the world meaningfully.
ii. Critical and creative problem-solvers – capable of making informed
decisions and solving real-world challenges.
iii. Culturally and socially sensitive citizens – who value diversity, respect
others, and practise empathy.
