HVACR 1442 notes
Lesson 6 Metering Devices
1.There are 2 boundaries between the High pressure and the Low pressure sides of a
refrigeration system.
2. The boundaries that exist between the high pressure and the low pressure sides of a
refrigeration system are the Metering Device boundary and the compressor boundary.
3. Approximately 25% of the liquid refrigerant is turned into Vapor (flash gas) as it
passes through the metering device.
4. Another name used for a metering device is The Expansion Valve.
5.The 7 types of metering devices used today are the high side float , Low side float,
Thematic Expansion Valve,Automatic Expansion Valve, Electronic Expansive Valve,
Capillary Tube , and the Fixed Orifice.
6. We have Capillary tube and TXV types of metering devices in our lab at Austin
Community College today.
7. Capillary tubes do not have any moving parts.
8.The abbreviation ID stands for Inside diameters.
9. Capillary tubes may be used in Medium and Low Temperature reach - in refrigerators.
10. Capillary tube metering devices may be used in refrigeration equipment that are
critically charged.
11. A Capillary tube is usually used in a fractional horsepower compressor.
