According to Ramakatsa (2020), teenage pregnancy in South African primary schools is caused by many factors that are linked to both personal and environmental issues. These include dysfunctional family structures, lack of parental guidance and supervision, alcohol and drug abuse, and peer pressure. Some teenagers also have a history of child abuse and suffer from psychological distress, which may lead them to risky behaviors. According to Govender et al. (2020, p. 2) and Fodo and Hariram (2024), other major causes are intimate partner violence, poverty, age-disparate relationships where girls are unable to negotiate condom use, poor school performance, and limited use of contraceptives. Ajay and Ezegbe (2020) add that restrictive policies around the age of consent for contraception and limited access to reproductive healthcare services also contribute to the problem. 3
