Structural Abnormalities
Brain Ventricles
- People with schizophrenia have larger brain ventricles
Weinberger et al (1979)
- Used CAT scans to compare schizophrenics with control group
- Found that schizophrenics have enlarged ventricles
- Meds didn’t affect this
Cortical Atrophy
Vita et al (1988)
- Conducted meta - analysis of brain imaging studies
- Patients with schizophrenia had a reduction in overall brain volume
Reversed Cerebral Asymmetry
- In schizophrenics, the right hemisphere is often larger than the left
- language is in the left, can explain alogia
Luchins et al (1979)
- Used CT scans to investigate brain asymmetry
- Found that schizophrenics showed reversed cerebral asymmetry and differences in
ventricle size
Evaluation
- Cause and effect
- Doesn’t look at environmental factors
- Gender?
