HCA-455: Organizational Behavior and Leadership in Health Care
Mayo Clinic is one of the most renowned facilities in the world with facilities in multiple
U.S. cities to include a facility located in the United Kingdom. Obtained more number one
ranking in the nation according to U.S. News and World report is no easy feat. Their mission,
values, and vision are to inspire hope and healthcare through integrated clinical practice,
education, and research. Transforming medicine to connect and cure as the global authority in the
case of serious or complex diseases. Values like the needs of the patient comes first, Respect,
integrity, compassion, healing, teamwork, innovation, excellence, and stewardship. All of which
are ideal especially in a healthcare setting. Through this paper I will identify Mayo Clinic’s
organizational behavior, leadership's role in communication, and current challenges.
Organizational Behavior Model
, Set by the Mayo brothers in the early years of the clinic. The Clinic utilizes a consensus
decision making model where it is governed by committees representing the three shields of the
practice, education, and research. Their physicians which are in leadership positions are rotated
on a regular basis for fresh ideas and experience among each other. The same goes for
administrators and management staff which can lead to a high staff retention creating a culture
for care. (Mayo Clinic, 2025). Mayo Clinic with this approach is a way to keep trained staff as
long as possible entrusted every employee to have the ability to rotate to become more efficient
as well as preserving the culture of continued learning which passing those skills learned on the
job to those who are willing. It centered itself around having all the physicians, administrators,
and management staff with this approach that can be evident with people wanting to stay longer
at this facility. When it comes to how this business model is particularly suited to a healthcare
setting, it easy to see why. The patient comes first value is high especially dealing with the case
