Effects of Bullying on Children
Bullying is a problem that many school-age children face. Bullying impacts the
livelihood of children whether they are the bully or the victim. Children whether the bully or
victim have behavioral problems that affect their well-being as a human. Children deserve to feel
loved and supported, not having to experience the feeling of victimization by the hands of a
bully. Students attending school have a right to an education that a bully should not have to
disrupt. Bullying is apparent in many forms and can negatively impact children’s mental health,
physical health, and social development.
Mental Health
Bullying can cause mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal
tendencies in children that has existing effects into adulthood. Bully-victims experience low
levels of self-esteem and withdrawal from peers. Bully victims are victims of depression and
self- harm to bullying. With the experiences and information that has developed it indicates that
youth who have been bullied are at increased risk of internalizing problems such as depression
, and anxiety, self-harm behaviors, suicidal thoughts and behavior psychotic symptoms and
somatic symptoms. Having proper resources such as family support and a trusted adult at school
can help prevent bullying. Children with mental disabilities such as autism are more likely to be
bullied than children with other intellectual disabilities. (Kowalski,et al, 2013). Bullies target
individuals who are not considered normal to them such as autism or other learning disabilities.
Autism is displayed in many forms, it not only impacts mental health but can also affects
physical health. As children struggle with their identity and peer disapproval, bullying leaves a
negative impact on the developing child.
