Question 1 (12 Marks)
Distinguish between leadership and management, and identify three examples of
the application of these concepts at Netcare.
Distinction between Leadership and Management:
Leadership is the ability to create a vision and guide people toward it by inspiring,
motivating, and influencing them. Leaders are usually focused on long-term goals,
change, innovation, and empowering others to think creatively. Leadership is often
about emotional intelligence, vision, and building relationships.
Management, in contrast, involves planning, organising, and controlling resources to
achieve specific outcomes. Managers ensure that operations run smoothly by following
systems and processes. Their main focus is on short-term goals, stability, and
efficiency.
In summary:
Leaders drive change and vision.
Managers maintain order and efficiency.
Examples at Netcare:
1. Leadership Example – Driving Innovation in Healthcare
Netcare’s executives promote a patient-centred care model that uses digital
tools and data analytics to improve healthcare delivery. This shows leadership by
encouraging innovation and setting a new direction for quality care in South
Africa’s private health sector.
, 2. Management Example – Operational Efficiency and Performance
Monitoring: Netcare uses patient satisfaction surveys to collect data on
service quality, operational efficiency, and patient experience. This is a clear
example of management, where processes are structured and monitored to
ensure consistent delivery of care, with managers overseeing the daily
functioning of the system and applying results to improve performance.
3. Leadership Example – Ethical Culture and Systems Leadership: By
implementing the Tip-Offs Anonymous programme, Netcare's leadership
displays ethical behaviour and integrity, fostering a culture of trust and openness.
This initiative reflects values-based leadership that prioritizes transparency and
accountability, inspiring employees to act ethically.
Question 2 (18 marks)
Discuss how Netcare can apply various cultural indicators. In your answer,
discuss each indicator and demonstrate the application of each indicator to
Netcare.
Organisational culture indicators help assess how effectively the values, norms, and
beliefs within an organisation support strategic objectives. At Netcare, several of these
indicators are clearly visible.
1. Values and Ethics: Netcare has a clear core value — care. This includes
respect for human dignity, empathy, and compassion. The ethical leadership
programs such as Tip-Offs Anonymous further strengthen this cultural value,
promoting a culture where ethical conduct is expected and upheld.
2. Communication: Netcare promotes open communication, especially through
patient engagement platforms that allow patients to access lifelong health data
and co-manage their health. Internally, the encouragement of managers to use
