Title: Philosophy of Education as the Creation of Concepts-in-Place
In a complex, diverse, and rapidly changing world, education faces increasing
challenges that demand critical reflection, contextual responsiveness, and ethical
guidance. One way to address these demands is through philosophy—particularly a
philosophy of education rooted in African perspectives. In this essay, I explore the
notion of philosophy of education as the creation of concepts-in-place. I begin by
defining philosophy and arguing for the importance of philosophising about education in
our contemporary world. I then examine the relationship between place, concepts, and
philosophy (of education), before offering a conceptualisation of philosophy of education
as the creation of concepts-in-place. Finally, I reflect on how this approach enables me
to be(come) a responsible and responsive educator within a complex and dynamic
educational landscape.
