FUNDAMENTAL CONCEPTS AND SKILLS
FOR NURSING CHAPTER 16
INFECTION - ANS The entry of an infectious agent, a microorganism into the body that
multiplies and disrupts tissue integrity
PATHOGENS - ANS Microorganism capable of causing disease
NORMAL FLORA - ANS Non-pathogenic organisms that are prevalent on and in the body
BACTERIA - ANS Single-cell microorganisms lacking a nucleus that reproduces from every few
minutes up to several weeks.
AEROBIC BACTERIA - ANS Bacteria that require oxygen for survival
ANAEROBIC BACTERIA - ANS Bacteria that do not require oxygen to live
COCCI - ANS Round shaped bacteria
BACILLI - ANS Rod shaped bacteria
SPIROCHETES BACTERIA - ANS Spiral shaped bacteria
ANTIBIOTIC - ANS A chemical that kills bacteria or slows their growth without harming body
cells.
PRIONS - ANS Protein particles that lack nucleic acids and are not inactivated by usual
methods for destroying bacteria or viruses
PROTOZOA - ANS One-celled microscopic organisms belonging to the animal kingdom
VIRUSES - ANS Extremely small. They composed of particles of nucleic acids, either DNA or
RNA,with a protein coat and sometimes a membranes envelop
RICKETTSIA - ANS Small rod-shaped or round microorganism that are transmitted by the bites
of lice, fleas, ticks, or mites
VECTORS - ANS Carrier that transport an infective agent from one host to another, such as
animals, insects and rodents
