📖 Detailed Summary of Hamlet
📍 Introduction and Setting
Hamlet is set in Denmark. The play begins at Elsinore Castle. King Hamlet, the old king, has
recently died. His son, Prince Hamlet, is deeply upset. The new king is Claudius, Hamlet’s
uncle, who quickly marries Hamlet’s mother, Gertrude. Hamlet is confused and sad about
these events.

The Ghost Appears
Hamlet is sad because his father, King Hamlet, has died. His mother, Gertrude, marries his
uncle Claudius very quickly. One night, a ghost appears. The ghost looks like Hamlet’s father
and tells Hamlet that Claudius killed him. The ghost asks Hamlet to get revenge.

Hamlet’s Struggle
Hamlet is confused and unsure if the ghost is telling the truth. He decides to act crazy to buy
time and figure out what to do. He starts acting strange, even though he is not really mad.
Hamlet also pushes away Ophelia, the woman he loves, which makes her sad.

Polonius and His Family
Polonius, the king’s advisor, thinks that Hamlet is mad because he loves Ophelia. He sends
her to talk to Hamlet, but Hamlet rejects her. Polonius also sends two of Hamlet’s old friends,
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to spy on him. Hamlet realizes what they are doing and mocks
them.

The Play within a Play
Hamlet wants to know for sure if Claudius is guilty. He arranges a play where the actors
reenact a murder similar to his father’s. Claudius reacts nervously during the play, which
makes Hamlet think the ghost was telling the truth. However, Hamlet still does not act.

Hamlet Confronts His Mother
Hamlet talks to his mother, Gertrude, and tells her how upset he is with her. During this talk,
he kills Polonius by accident. Polonius was hiding behind a curtain, and Hamlet thought he
was Claudius. Claudius sends Hamlet away to England, hoping to get rid of him.

Ophelia’s Death
Ophelia is heartbroken over Hamlet’s behavior and the death of her father. She goes mad and
drowns in a stream. Her brother, Laertes, returns from France and is angry. He wants to get
revenge on Hamlet for killing his father.

The Final Duel
Hamlet returns to Denmark. Laertes and Hamlet agree to fight in a duel. Claudius plans to kill
Hamlet during the duel by using a poisoned sword and a poisoned drink. During the fight,

, both Hamlet and Laertes are wounded by the poisoned sword. Gertrude drinks the poisoned
cup by mistake and dies.

Hamlet Kills Claudius
Hamlet kills Claudius in the end, but he is also poisoned. Before Hamlet dies, he names
Fortinbras, the prince of Norway, as the next king of Denmark. Fortinbras arrives and takes
control of Denmark after Hamlet’s death.

Conclusion
The play ends with the death of the royal family. Fortinbras becomes the new ruler of
Denmark.
