Cell Cycle and Cell Division

Overview

The cell cycle is the orderly set of events that a cell undergoes as it grows and divides. This cycle is essential

for the survival, maintenance, and reproduction of all organisms. Cell division, the final outcome of this cycle,

ensures continuity of life and proper functioning of tissues.

Stages of the Cell Cycle

The cycle is mainly composed of two broad phases: Interphase and the Mitotic Phase (M phase).

1. Interphase: This is the longest part of the cycle where the cell prepares for division. It has three

sub-stages:

- G1 Phase: The cell increases in size and produces RNA and proteins essential for DNA replication.

- S Phase: Each chromosome duplicates, resulting in two identical sister chromatids.

- G2 Phase: Final preparations are made, such as synthesizing proteins and checking for DNA errors.

2. Mitotic Phase (M Phase): This includes both nuclear division (mitosis or meiosis) and cytoplasmic division

(cytokinesis).

Mitosis - Asexual Division

Mitosis is the process by which a cell divides to produce two genetically identical daughter cells. It ensures

tissue growth and repair in multicellular organisms. The steps are:

- Prophase: DNA condenses into visible chromosomes, and spindle fibers begin to form.

- Metaphase: Chromosomes line up at the central plane of the cell.

- Anaphase: The identical chromatids are pulled apart to opposite sides.
