Marriage and Family Ch 6-11 McDaniel &

Adverse selectivity -
✅ A tendency for people who chose to act certain ways by the nature of who they are,
which puts them at risks for certain outcomes. May seem like there are cause and effect
relationships when they do not exist.
cohort effect -
✅ The accumulated experience of going through life in the same set of years. For
example, millennials are experienced a lot of new technology in their lifetimes, from using landlines
to having their own smart phones.
Determinant -
✅ A factor that contributes to the outcome, without being the direct cause.
Ex: man abusing his wife. the couple get a divorce. The divorce is not the cause of the fighting, the
fighting happened and the result is that she is unhappy and wants a divorce.
Femininity -
✅ A cluster of characteristics such as; nurturance, sensitivity, and gentleness, which are
traditionally considered female characteristics, but can be found in both men and women.
Macro level divorce -
✅ broad level of examining divorce focusing on changes that affect society as a whole.
The social, cultural, economic, and political forces that shape marriage. Sociologists will measure a
marriage or relationship breakdown, and to measure the link between relationship breakdown and
legal divorce. Some measures they have found include; economic cycles (when the couple has less
money, despite how expensive divorce is), gender expectations, cultural values and social
integration.
Meso level divorce -
✅ middle level of examining a social phenomenon, focusing on demographics, people
involved.
Sociologists typically find demographic predictors; the characteristics of those who typically get
divorced. Young age at marriage is a characteristic, as well as cohabitation, second marriages,
parental divorce, child bearing, stage of marriage, place of residence, religion and social economic
status.
Micro level -
✅ smallest level of examining social phenomenon, focusing on individuals. Focusing on
the attitudes, beliefs etc. of those who divorce. Often people don't know why they do what they do,
and if something went wrong in the relationship, they may not know why. Those who have very few
similar interests often divorce, as well as those who have poor communication skills, inequity
among spouses, and limited love and respect for the other spouse.
No fault divorce -
1
, ✅ Divorce because of martial breakdown, not necessarily either spouce did anything
wrong.
Predictor -
✅ Something that is correlated with the outcome but may not be the direct cause.
Secularization -
✅ Moving away from religion
Social disorganization -
✅ Breakdown of societal functioning
Social integration -
✅ Close knit communities that share similar world values and have a strong belief of
social rules.
social pathology -
✅ A broad based distress or disorganization within a society
socio economic status -
✅ class, standing in society in terms of income, education and prestige.
Authoritarian parenting -
✅ Parenting that involves low acceptance and high control. This can hinder a child's
development of expressiveness and independence
Crude divorce rate -
✅ Number of divorces in a given year, divided by mid year population, and multiplied by
100,00. This includes everyone in the population, which may not be accurate as they include
children, singles, and those who are already divorced.
Divorce rate by given year -
✅ Number of those who are divorced in the year are divided by marriages of that same
year. This is inaccurate as those who are married in 2018 aren't necessarily going to be divorcing
that same year, if they even divorce at all.
Population at risk of a divorce -
✅ This is more accurate as it considers a population at risk of divorce. For example, to
figure out the divorce rate of those married in the beginning of 2018 and earlier, as well as targeting
older couples as they are more likely to get divorced.
Effect on those who are divorced -
✅ Economic: only one income household, especially worse for women as they usually
make less and often have custody of the children.
Disagree of non custodial parents co-parenting: Problems with visitation rights, non custodial parent
getting to see them too much etc.
