EUP1501 Assignment 5 (Portfolio) Semester 1 Memo | Due 29 May 2025. 4
Social Media Awareness Post Provided.
Section A: Role of social media in achieving the Sustainable Development
Goals. (35 Marks) Background The 2030 Agenda was adopted unanimously
by United Nations in 2015, as “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity
for people and the planet” (United Nations, 2021). The agenda has three
intertwined dimensions – economic prosperity, social justice, and
environmental protection (UN ESCAP, 2017). It is composed of 17 sustainable
development goals (SDGs) that collectively “are a universal call to action to
end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and
prosperity” (UNDP, 2019). Each of the 17 sustainable development goals has
targets (for a total of 169 targets), each of which is measured by indicators.
Tasks: DISCUSS the role of social media in achieving the Sustainable
Development Goals. In your discussion, make sure to include the following
(use appropriate headings): • Choose two SDGs and provide background
information for each. • Motivate why you have chosen these SDGs. • Explain
how social media platforms (e.g., Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook,
YouTube) contribute towards promoting the chosen SDGs. • Provide
examples of campaigns, influencers, or organizations using social media to
drive change (you may include). • Reflect on how digital activism helps
create awareness and inspire action at local or global levels. Expected
Length: 500–700 words.
Section A: Role of Social Media in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Introduction
Social media has become a powerful tool for communication, education, and mobilization in the
21st century. In the context of the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,
social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and YouTube play a
critical role in raising awareness, encouraging public participation, and driving meaningful
action towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This discussion explores how social
, media contributes to the achievement of two specific SDGs: Goal 3: Good Health and Well-
being and Goal 13: Climate Action.
Background Information on Chosen SDGs
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
This goal aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Key targets
include reducing maternal and child mortality, combating communicable and non-communicable
diseases, and ensuring universal access to healthcare services (UNDP, 2019).
Goal 13: Climate Action
This goal focuses on taking urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It
emphasizes the need for global cooperation in strengthening resilience and adaptive capacity to
climate-related hazards (UN ESCAP, 2017).
Motivation for Choosing These SDGs
I selected Goal 3 and Goal 13 because they represent pressing global challenges with direct
relevance to both current and future generations. Health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic
have demonstrated the vital importance of public health awareness, while increasing climate-
related disasters highlight the urgency of addressing environmental degradation. These SDGs are
interconnected and require active public engagement, making them ideal areas where social
media can have a transformative impact.
Role of Social Media in Promoting the Chosen SDGs
Social media platforms allow for the rapid dissemination of information, enabling governments,
NGOs, activists, and individuals to educate and engage the public on key issues related to health
and climate change.
For Goal 3, platforms like YouTube and Instagram have been instrumental in sharing health
information. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization
(WHO) used Instagram Live to answer public health questions, debunk myths, and encourage
vaccination. TikTok creators have also spread mental health awareness, offering tips and support
to millions of followers.
Regarding Goal 13, platforms such as Twitter and Facebook serve as hubs for climate-related
activism. Activists like Greta Thunberg use Twitter to share urgent climate messages and
mobilize youth around the world. Hashtags like #FridaysForFuture and #ClimateStrike have
trended globally, creating virtual communities dedicated to sustainability.
