GEOGRAPHY
GRADE 11
JUNE EXAM
2025
Previous exam papers were used to compile these
notes. IMPAQ JUN 2020, IMPAQ JUN 2021, IMPAQ
JUN 2022. REVISION BOOK 2024_WCED.
These are suggested answers from the
memorandum. Some information is repeated, I
want to show you the different ways in which the
same information is asked.
I encourage you to answer the calculation/illustration questions.

Coriolis force Causes winds to be deflected from their original direction
Global air Large-scale air movement in the atmosphere
circulation
Pressure gradient Difference in air pressure that causes air to move from a high to a low
pressure
Geostrophic flow Winds that blow parallel to the isobars in the upper atmosphere
Trade winds Winds that blow in the tropics
Three-cell The three cells of air circulation in each hemisphere
circulation
Polar easterlies Winds that originate at the poles
Front The name of the transition zone where two different air masses meet
Spring equinox Occurs on September 23, resulting in an equally long day and night.
Geostrophic flow A wind that results from a precise balance between the Coriolis force and
the pressure gradient force.
West winds A wind that blows from the subtropical high pressure belt to the subpolar
low pressure belt.
Ferrel's law The law that states that winds bend to the left in the Southern Hemisphere
and to the right in the Northern Hemisphere.
Summer solstice Occurs on December 21, resulting in long days and short nights
Tropical easterly A wind that blows from the subtropical regions towards the equator.

Atmospheric The weight of the atmosphere on the Earth's surface.

THE ATMOSPHERE
THE EARTH'S ENERGY BALANCE
Refer to the diagram below which shows the development of seasons as the Earth
moves around the Sun.. IMPAQ JUN 2022
All information in the diagram is for the Southern Hemisphere.
The path that the Earth follows around the Sun is its orbit. The Earth's movement around
the Sun is its rotation. The Earth experiences an equinox when the Sun shines directly
above the equator. South Africa experiences its spring equinox in September. During a
winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the day is shorter than the night. The area
north of the Arctic Circle experiences a 24-hour day during a summer solstice in the
Northern Hemisphere.

The uneven heating of the atmosphere and the transfer of energy
@ Juffrou_Ansie
, 4
Areas closer to the Equator do not get warmer and
warmer. Winds and oceans transfer the energy from
equatorial areas to the poles. Therefore, a heat balance is
maintained on the Earth.
The importance of the Earth's axis and revolution
around the sun.
