Introduction
Educational research has long been a vehicle through which
knowledge is produced, validated, and institutionalised.
However, much of this research has historically been complicit
in upholding colonial power structures—prioritising Eurocentric
paradigms and sidelining Indigenous ways of knowing. In
postcolonial contexts like South Africa, where the wounds of
epistemic injustice still run deep, there is a growing urgency to
decolonise research practices and to reimagine the ethics that
underpin them.
This paper explores how decolonising methodologies can
transform research in education, particularly when viewed
through the lens of Indigenous epistemologies. Drawing on
Linda Tuhiwai Smith’s critical insights, the discussion
foregrounds the importance of ethical intervention—a research
orientation that resists extractive practices and centres the
voices, experiences, and knowledge systems of Indigenous
communities. It argues that educational researchers must move
beyond tokenistic inclusion toward deep, respectful, and
