Question 1
Emotional Wellbeing
Emotional wellbeing refers to an individual’s ability to manage emotions, cope with
stress, and maintain a generally positive outlook (Rothman, 2022). In Thulani’s case, his
emotional wellbeing is significantly compromised. After experiencing an armed robbery,
he reported nightmares and heightened anxiety, which are lasting symptoms of trauma.
His continued state of alertness and fear indicates emotional dysregulation and
unresolved distress. This emotional strain has persisted for two years, affecting his
sleep and contributing to his feelings of helplessness and fear, especially regarding his
family's safety after the KZN floods.
Thulani's attempts to seek support from colleagues were met with avoidance,
exacerbating his emotional isolation. Furthermore, the uncertainty and poor
communication around company restructuring added to his emotional burden, leading to
increased stress. Despite these challenges, Thulani’s engagement with a spiritual
community demonstrates an effort to restore emotional balance. His nightly prayers
after nightmares are coping mechanisms aligned with his belief in divine protection,
providing him with emotional reassurance. However, the fact that these nightmares
persist and he conceals his struggles from his wife suggests that his emotional
wellbeing remains fragile and in need of professional psychological intervention
(Rothman, 2022).
