INSTRUCTIONS:
1. For each chapter that teaches about medications, fill in the following table regarding the chosen meds.
CLASS: GENERIC NAME: TRADE NAMES:
Therapeutic: Antiretroviral Zidovudine Retrovir
Pharmaceutical: Nucleoside
reverse transcriptase
inhibitors
MOA:
Following intracellular conversion to its active form, inhibits viral RNA synthesis by inhibiting the enzyme DNA polymerase
Prevents viral replication
INDICATIONS:
Antiretrovirals such as Zidovudine are used for the treatment of HIV infections
Reduction of maternal/fetal transmission of HIV
CONTRAINDICATIONS/PRECAUTIONS:
Contraindications: Hypersensitivity
Precautions: severe renal and hepatic impairment, people with decreases bone marrow reserve need a lower dose, In women and obese patients as
they have a higher risk of lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly
>Lactation: Breastfeeding not recommended in mothers with HIV
>Geriatric: Select dose carefully due to potential for age-related decrease in hepatic, renal, or cardiac function.
INTERACTIONS with other Drugs/Substances:
Decreased bone marrow depression with other agents having bone marrow depressing properties
Increased neurotoxicity with acyclovir
Toxicity maybe be increased by concurrent administration of probenecid or fluconazole
PATIENT RESPONSE / REACTIONS: COMMON SIDE EFFECTS: ADVERSE REACTIONS: S/S TOXICITY: TOXICITY/OVERDOSE TX:
DESIRED OUTCOME: Heartburn Lactic acidosis and n/a n/a
Decrease in viral load and Insomnia severe
increase in CD4 counts in GI: Abdominal hepatomegaly
patients with HIV pain, diarrhea, Neuro: dizziness,
Delayed progression of AIDS nausea seizures, syncope,
and decreased opportunistic Neuro: headache, tremor
infections in patients with weakness GI:, anorexia,
HIV Hemat: anemia, dyspepsia,
Reduction of maternal/fetal granulocytopenia Hepatomegaly,
transmission of HIV. pancreatitis,
vomiting,
Derm: Nail
