QUESTIONS
Who needs a license? - ANS-Anyone who hunts wild birds or animals in Maine

Junior Hunter - ANS-hunters under the age of 16

Exceptions (assisting in a hunt) - ANS-you can do this as long as you don't carry any
hunting equipment

Landowner Priviledge - ANS-Maine resident landowners and immediate family
members can hunt w/o a license on land they own and reside upon as long as it is 10 or
more acres and used exclusively for agricultural purposes (does not apply to revoked or
suspended licenses or moose hunting)

License Requirements? - ANS-either held a hunting license in a prior year or taken a
hunter safety course.

Native American Exception - ANS-Native Americans are exempt from the safety course
requirement for archery, crossbow and trapping

Military Exception - ANS-active-duty Armed Forces member stationed outside the US
who is home on leave is exempt from hunter, archery and crossbow safety
requirements if they can show proof at time of license application that their home state
of record is Maine

Resident (definition) - ANS-US citizen or non-citizen who has been domiciled in the
State for 1 year +: 1) is registered to vote, is registered in this state + 2) is license to
drive a motor vehicle, has made application for or possesses a Maine driver's license +
3) has registered in Maine any motor vehicles they own that are located within the state
+ 4) is in compliance with the state income tax law + 5) is a full-time student at a Maine
college/university who satisfies above requirements.

Nonresident (definition) - ANS-means a person who does not fall within the definition of
a resident

Apprentice Hunter License - ANS-available to anyone 16 or older who has never held a
hunting license. Can get this license 5 times max. Must hunt in the presence of a
licensed hunter over 18 yrs old.

GHL - Unlawful Conduct - ANS-the hunting, possession, transporting of any species of
wild animal or bird (or parts thereof) that does not have an open hunting season. It is
also unlawful to take, possess or needlessly destroy the nest or eggs of any wild bird.

otherwise provided)

attract wild animals for the purpose of hunting

GHL - Placement of Bait - ANS-must have 1) oral or written permission from landowner
2) labeled the bait 2x4" tag with the name and address of the baiter 3) cleans up the bait
site immediately upon landowner request or withing 20 days of last day the site is
hunted.

GHL - Hunting over bait - ANS-you cannot hunt over anyone else's bait site

GHL - Deer Baiting Laws - ANS-No deer baiting or feeding June 1 - December 1

GHL - Turkey & Moose Baiting Laws - ANS-No turkey or moose baiting from Sept 1 -
Dec 15. No baiting turkey during spring turkey season either.

equip is wrapped in a complete cover, fastened in a case, carried in at least 2 pieces
that you need to assemble in order to discharge.

GHL - Shooting from a Motor Vehicle or Motorboat - ANS-it's unlawful to shoot while in
or on a car, atv, motorboat or snowmobile

GHL - Possession of Loaded Firearm or Crossbow in/on Motor Vehicle - ANS-it's
unlawful to possess a loaded firearm/crossbow while on a car, atv, motorboat or
snowmobile
