PTAP 1240 HYDROTHERAPY AND AQUATICS
TEST
Hydrotherapy
applied externally by immersion of body/part into water
- whirlpools
Pulsed Lavage
Non immersion technique to clean wounds
Aquatic Therapy
- swimming pools
- swim exercise
Viscosity
- resistance to flow of a liquid
- water has low viscosity
Hydrostatic Pressure
pressure exerted by a fluid on the body immersed in it
Clinical Significance of Hydrostatic Pressure
- promote circulation (increase venous return)
- alleviate peripheral edema caused by venous/lymphatic insufficiency
- increased venous return may also facilitate cardiovascular function
- buoyancy may help brace unstable joints or weak muscles
- centralizes peripheral blood flow but results in chest compression which may
result in difficulty breathing for patients with COPD
Physical Properties of Water
, - Solvent
- Resistance
-Buoyancy
- Specific Heat and Thermal Conductivity
Water transfers heat through what?
Conduction and Convection (Heating or Cooling Agent)
Clinical Significance of Buoyancy
- provides patient with relative weightlessness and joint unloading
- amount of weightlessness depends on % of body that is below the surface of
water
- practitioner has 3D access to patient
Specific Gravity (Relative Density)
- weight of a particular substance compared with the weight of an equal volume
of water
- specific gravity INCREASES when there is increased bone mass and muscle
mass
- DECREASES when greater amounts of body fat
Water Specific Gravity
1.0
Objects with Specific Gravity < 1.0
FLOAT
Objects with Specific Gravity > 1.0
SINK
Human Body Specific Gravity
0.87 - 0.97
Center of Buoyancy (COB)
Body's center of gravity when in the water
Where is the Center of Buoyancy in human body?
