Reading Comprehension

A. Disciplinary literacy the process of pulling two disciplines together and teaching
them at the same time. A concept that highlights the difference among the variety of
texts used in different disciplines, and the specialized reading practices required for
comprehension and critical analysis of ideas within both. Disciplinary literacy pushes
students to move beyond reading, writing, listening, and viewing solely for academic
purposes (Hamilton & Stolle, 2016). It leads to the understanding that every field of
study creates, communicates, and evaluates knowledge differently (Lent, 2015).
Literacy is the cornerstone of student achievement for any student in any grade (Wise,
2009).
Learning mathematics encompasses learning the language of mathematics
(Hunter, Perger, & Darragh, 2018). Literacy in math plays a big role because there are a
variety of things to unpack, from terminology, word meanings, symbols, and shapes.
Teachers must adapt to meet the ever-evolving literacy needs. There are a lot of ways
students use literacy in math without knowing they are doing it; some things are just
second nature and stick with you. For example, learning how to ride a bike or learning
how to drive, once it is embedded in your brain it just sticks and you do it without
thinking about how or when you learned how to do it. Math is one of those subjects that
a lot of students feel they are not good at, and mostly it is not that they are not good at
math, it is that the students are not comprehending the literacy behind the math. The
goal of teaching and learning math is not to be able to compute or work through
algorithms or memorize facts. It is to understand (Bethany, 2016). Using literacy
strategies to teach math will help secondary students understand and make
connections between the numbers and how to apply them to real life situations. Math is
connected to everyday life and using those real-world examples helps students make
those connections. For example, a Math Teacher can use baking a cake or cookies as
the real-world comparison for a lesson about whole numbers, mixed numbers, and
fractions. Whereas a Science Teacher can use baking a cake or cookies as a real-world
comparison for a lesson about liquids, gases, and solids. Teachers should be intentional
about the way they present these strategies to their students. Help the students see
math in the world around them (Bethany, 2016). Making connections between the
disciplines and real-world situations is probably the easiest and the most natural way to
help secondary students comprehend literacy in math.

B. Content area literacy focuses on a general set of discipline specific strategies
that are used to promote reading comprehension. Content area literacy has an
important role in helping students understand content is a specific discipline (Armstrong,
Ming, and Helf, 2018). One content area literacy example is the Frayer Model. The
Frayer Model is a graphic organizer that is used for building student vocabulary (The
Teacher Toolkit). The concept of this strategy is to help students gain a more in depth
understanding of word meaning and to draw on to prior knowledge to make connections
(The Teacher Toolkit). In the video on The Teacher Toolkit website, the teacher states
