Scene Size Up - ANSWER
1. I'm number one - Survey the scene for hazards
2. What happened to you? - Determine a MOI
3. Don't get any on me - Establish body substance isolation (BSI)
4. Are there any more? - Determine number of patients. Consider resources
present, either in rescue party or immediate party.
5. Determine overall impression of patient -
* Very ill or very injured
* not ill / not seriously injured
* Determine ABC or CAB
what does A B C D E stand for? - ANSWER airway, breathing, circulation,
disability, expose
Initial evaluation & ABCDE - ANSWER
, 1. Familiarize self and training level with patient, and obtain permission to treat.
2. Responsiveness and spine control: if they have an MOI for spine injury,
protect their spine.
A 3. Airway management: examine mouth and remove obstructions. Ask the
patient to protrude tongue.
B 4. Is the airway adequate? Take two deep breaths. Does that cause pain?
Exposure of chest injuries.
C 5. Circulation: Assess for pulse and signs of circulation, control life-
threatening bleeding.
D 6. Decision regarding disability: do not protect or protect spine
E 7. Expose: expose and control life threatening injuries.
Secondary Assessment - ANSWER Full physical exam, vital signs, and sample
history.
Full Physical exam (head-to-toe) - ANSWER Look for bruising, bleeding,
swelling, response to pain by anything unusual. Ask the patient about
tenderness or pain. Look for deformities, abnormal hardness or softness, or
anything abnormal. Auscultate for abnormal breath sounds or grunts and groans
by the patient. Olfact for abnormal odors.
