The Impacts of Drugs on the Brain
The generation is now unaware of the heavy drugs that formerly permeated our streets
before the medical need was so heavily reliant upon them. Fentanyl, an opiate that causes
widespread central nervous system depression, is the most recent narcotic to catch America's
attention. There have been other commonly used medicines that have the same effect as fentanyl
before. By the middle of the 1960s, barbiturates were synthesized and ready for usage. They
were initially designed for use as anesthesia for surgical procedures. Further research revealed
that the medicine was highly effective for several mental in capacities. According to a study, the
potency of a barbiturate affects how well it works. Some barbiturates are available as pills or
injections, and both have a similar time of action on the body. Various street names known
barbiturates; in this essay, they may be called Barbies, sleepers, or Red & Blues. Most of the
nicknames at the time were based on the pills' physical traits or physiological effects.
Drug Description
Barbiturates mimic barbituric acid chemically. Barbies were utilized as depressants to
treat sleepiness, anxiety, and seizures in the late 1960s and early 1970s (TFC, 2020). The length
of an effect is used to classify various drugs. Barbiturates are long-lasting and cause pain in a
unique way. Thiopentone and luminal, ultra-short-acting barbiturates were used as general
anesthesia for convulsions and cranial hypertension in the previous 30 minutes. The surgical
sedative phenobarbital lasts about two hours. Barbiturates last longer. Phenobarbitone lasts 6
hours. Short-acting barbiturates excite users. Drugs depress the CNS globally. This causes
sedation. Less addictive and overdose-prone medicinal drugs are replacing barbiturates. 11% of
males and 23% of females who use sedative-hypnotics commit suicide (NIH, 2017). Barbiturates
are sedatives. Thus, doctors prescribe fewer CNS depressants.
