Description of the Curriculum
Bridges in Mathematics by The Math Learning Center is the curriculum that will be
evaluated in this task. The content area is third grade Mathematics. The learning target of
Bridges is the focus and development of students’ deep understanding of mathematical
concepts, proficiency with key skills, and the ability to solve complex and novel
problems. The curriculum is anchored in inquiry-based approaches to math education
for pre-K through grade 5. (The Math Learning Center, n.d.)
Context: Need or Problem
Often times in the elementary school setting, math lacks opportunity for collaboration,
sufficient hands-on learning experiences, and strong engagement. This curriculum
should include several lessons and activities that would enhance engagement from
students and promote collaborative and hands-on learning.
Input: Curriculum Components
One piece of the curriculum that encourages student engagement and active
collaboration is the use of games, manipulatives, and visual models to connect with
math concepts and make them easier to understand for all types of learners. Bridges
, include a feature called Work Places, which are math stations that have games and
activities where students will choose their activities and collaborate with their peers.
These activities and games make learning mathematic concepts and skills memorable
and meaningful (The Math Learning Center, n.d.)
