Chapter 11 - Light
Light
- Light is a form of energy that our eyes can detect.
- Light always travels along a straight line. This is illustrated by
trying to flame candle using a straight pipe and a bent pipe.
Reflection of light
- When light falls on a certain surface it either bounces or reflects
back. Such surfaces are well polished. The phenomenon of light
bouncing off of the surface is called reflection.
- A mirror is generally a shiny surface that can reflect back light.
- A mirror that has a plane surface is called a plane mirror.
- Mirror that is curved it either bulges in or out is called a curved
mirror
1. Concave mirror - if the inner side of a mirror is reflecting then
it is a concave mirror.
2. Convex mirror - if the outer side of a mirror is reflecting then it
is a convex mirror.
, Image
- Image of an object can be defined as the impression of the object
caused by created by the light on the mirror.
Real Image
- An image that can be obtained on a screen is called real image.
Virtual Image
- An image that cannot be obtained on a screen is called virtual
image.
Types of Images
1. The image formed by a plane mirror has the following properties.
- Plane mirror forms erect image.
- It forms a virtual image.
- The size of the image is same as of the object.
