Middle East notes: Israel post-1948 war:
Refugee Crisis
 The 1948 war created a refugee population of Palestinian people in
refugee camps surrounding Israel, and it became clear that they
could not return
 Conditions = TERRIBLE. Host countries for refugees lacked
resources.
 Currently 6 million refugees (2023 statistics)
 Militant armed groups developed out of the refugee crisis and began
to mount attacks on Israeli targets
 Main attack = Al-Fatah (1958)
6 Day War (1976)
 West Bank was occupied by Israel
 USA and USSR were getting involved (extension of the cold war)
 Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq signed a military alliance and built up
their forces along the Israeli border.
 Israel attacked first, destroying air forces and leaving Arab armies
vulnerable.
 Israel dominates Arab countries in 6 days and gains Arab territory.
 They refused to return land.
 This all led to more desperate retaliation (terrorism).
Yom Kippur war (1973)
 Egypt and Syria rebuilt their air forces.
 They launched a surprise attack on the Jewish religious holiday of
Yom Kippur.
 Egypt then reclaim Sinai Peninsula
 USA + USSR get involved by airlifting tons of weapons and supplies
(escalating into a global conflict)
 After 3 weeks of fighting. The Israelis pushed the invading forces
back.
 Arab attempts to settle the Palestinian question by military means,
were abandoned.
 They used civil resistance instead, therefore, militant control of
Palestine by Israel became more determined in response.
 Israel made use of guerilla attacks, bombing and assassination in
response.
 Israel government began confiscating Palestinian land and building
settlements.
Intifada (to get rid of)
