Refugee Crisis
The 1948 war created a refugee population of Palestinian people in
refugee camps surrounding Israel, and it became clear that they
could not return
Conditions = TERRIBLE. Host countries for refugees lacked
resources.
Currently 6 million refugees (2023 statistics)
Militant armed groups developed out of the refugee crisis and began
to mount attacks on Israeli targets

6 Day War (1976)
West Bank was occupied by Israel
USA and USSR were getting involved (extension of the cold war)
Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Iraq signed a military alliance and built up
their forces along the Israeli border.
Israel attacked first, destroying air forces and leaving Arab armies
vulnerable.
Israel dominates Arab countries in 6 days and gains Arab territory.
They refused to return land.
This all led to more desperate retaliation (terrorism).
Yom Kippur war (1973)
Egypt and Syria rebuilt their air forces.
They launched a surprise attack on the Jewish religious holiday of
Yom Kippur.
Egypt then reclaim Sinai Peninsula
USA + USSR get involved by airlifting tons of weapons and supplies
(escalating into a global conflict)
After 3 weeks of fighting. The Israelis pushed the invading forces
back.
Arab attempts to settle the Palestinian question by military means,
were abandoned.
They used civil resistance instead, therefore, militant control of
Palestine by Israel became more determined in response.
Israel made use of guerilla attacks, bombing and assassination in
response.
Israel government began confiscating Palestinian land and building
settlements.
Intifada (to get rid of)
Protests in occupied areas occurred in 1987
