NRS 445 Topic 3 DQ 2

Select a research article that uses a randomized controlled trial focusing on a clinical nursing problem of
your choice. Use this research article to address the following questions:

1. Provide an APA reference of the article including a GCU permalink or working link used to access the
article.
2. Using the "CASP Randomized Controlled Trial Checklist," found in topic Resources, evaluate the
study. Based on your findings, summarize the critical appraisal of the selected research article.
3. Do the benefits of the experimental intervention outweigh the harms and costs? Identify and discuss
one other ethical consideration applicable to quantitative research studies such as this one.
Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references
cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one
reference. Refer to "RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric" and "RN-BSN Participation Rubric" located in
Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation
posts, respectively.

1. Did the study address a clearly focused research question? Yes, to evaluate whether a web-
based educational intervention improved personal protective equipment (PPE) use among
oncology nurses (population) who handle hazardous drugs (“Randomized Controlled Trial of
an Intervention to Improve Nurses’ Hazardous Drug Handling,” 2019).
2. Was the assignment of participants to interventions randomized? In a cluster randomized
controlled trial, 136 nurses in control settings received a one-hour educational module on
PPE use with quarterly reminders, and 121 nurses in treatment settings received the control
intervention plus tailored messages to address perceived barriers and quarterly data
gathered on hazardous drug spills across all study settings.
3. Were all participants who entered the study accounted for at its conclusion? Yes, all nurses
in study were accounted for at the end of the study.
4. Were the participants ‘blind’ to intervention they were given? Not sure, they were
assigned education but did not say that they were blind to the interventions given to the
others.
5. Were the study groups similar at the start of the randomized controlled trial? Yes, they
received education on proper PPE while handling the hazardous drugs. It was the continued
