The intercostal muscles (3 layers) are part of the anterolateral trunk. The external
intercostal layer is behind/aligned with the posterior portion of the ribcage (it exists
between the ribs). It overlaps with the internal intercostal layer as the top layer.

The intercostal muscles (3 layers) are part of the anterolateral trunk. They are aligned
with and deep to the ribcage. The external intercostal layer is the outer layer, the
internal intercostal layer is the middle layer, and the innermost intercostal layer is the
deepest layer. The external layer makes up the posterior, lateral, and ~ half the anterior
portion of the intercostal layers. The internal layer makes up the other ~ half of the
anterior portion. The innermost layer is buried deep to both the external and internal
layers, and is not visible from the outside.
