Teachers have a significant responsibility in a student’s well-being and safety inside the
classroom. A teacher’s key role is to support learners in their quest to gain knowledge in a set of
subject areas. Teachers spend as much time with a student as their parents do with them.
Therefore, they help construct character and instill morals in a student. Teachers help nourish
self-esteem and build integrity as a child develops. Outside of teaching, Teachers also have a
personal life. In the scenario for this paper, Mr. Y is in his first ninety days of employment. He
has made friends during that time and feels comfortable inviting his new friends to his social
media page. The issue with this scenario is that one of his colleagues found a photograph of him
with party-goers smoking marijuana. Are there issues or consequences Mr. Y face because he
enjoys partying and being associated with people who smoke marijuana during his leisure time
away from his teaching job?
Issues or Concerns
, The most obvious concern is the picture of Mr. Y with party-goers smoking marijuana.
Drugs of any nature come with a bad stigma. Although marijuana is legal in some states and
considered a social drug, as a teacher, it sends the wrong message to your colleagues. Another
issue with the scenario is it could diminish your character. Your colleagues will cast judgment on
you. They will no longer see the professional in the classroom but the “party-going weed head”.
The best thing to do when inviting your colleagues to your social media page is to limit access.
Create a space for friends and family and another for colleagues to share your posts that want
spark questions or concerns.
