Frank Practicing Psychology
Case Study
Frank, who practices psychology in private practice, understands that expenses can
become a burden if he does not acquire patients with insurance to cover the costs of his
treatments. Therefore, the crucial factor that influences his focus is insurance coverage. He
believes he will have a successful private practice through financial gain by treating patients with
a specific diagnosis that can be reimbursed through the issuance. For example, his patient
Eduardo, has some symptoms indicating that he may have dependent personality disorder (DPD),
however, since DPD is not reimbursable, Frank deliberately asks leading questions on the topic
of depression. Although Eduardo presents with more signs of DPD, Frank ensures that Eduardo
is labeled with depression because treatment for the depression diagnosis is reimbursable. After
the session, Frank reflected on how he was altering his therapy style but convinced himself that
this method would benefit not only him but also his future patients.
The ethical dilemmas involving Frank's practice are persuaded by the financial pressures
associated with maintaining the practice. When Frank decides to alter his therapeutic approach
and establish the client's diagnosis based on insurance reimbursements, he reflects a lack of self-
regulation. Self-regulation is a multifaceted skill that encompasses impulsivity and mindfulness.
In the course text Social Psychology and Human Nature (5th ed.) self-regulation is the
fundamental basis of self-directed personal development. Cognitive control, emotional
regulation, behavioral regulation, and goal setting each play a role in self-regulation. Financial
gain is an external factor that compromises Frank's professional integrity and dictates the
treatment his client will receive. Frank’s demonstration of the rationale for leading questions
about depression indicates an example his failure to regulate his motivations. Although he
