NURS-FPX6210- Leadership and Management for Nurse Executives
2
Nurses are involved in treatment at every level of care. This puts nursing professionals in
a unique position to identify successful and unsuccessful practices. Nurses are constantly
balancing what has been proven through evidence-based practice and what state and facility
regulations dictate must be done. The true balancing act comes from identifying how to
incorporate both into one practice model. These situations often put nurses at the forefront of
policy change within a facility. Utilizing evidence and facilities ability directs nurses to create
system level changes that meet the needs of patients in a safe and meaningful way. Two methods
to approach process improvement include appreciative inquiry and strength, weakness,
opportunities, and threat (SWOT) models. Appreciative inquiry is an approach that starts process
improvement through a strength-based approach. By building on current success healthcare
leaders can make organizational changes from a place of positivity and incorporation of prior
successful practices. A strength, weakness, opportunities, and threat (SWOT) approach identifies
, problems impacting the facility, identifies positives and negatives of practice, and identifies
opportunities for improvement (Hollingsworth & Reynolds, 2020). This analysis will be
conducted on a New York state psychiatric facility working with Article 10 clients. Article 10
clients are violent sex offenders with a high likelihood of reoffence. These individuals have
completed their prison sentences and have been committed to a secure treatment program; it is
similar to prison but has an annual review by a judge to determine if the resident meets the
criteria for release. Stay time is varied; some residents leave in a year, and some will never be
released.
