CPU Components. Computers.
Computer Science. GCSE (9.1)
Central Processing Unit (CPU) - answerThe part of the computer which completes all
the instructions. Referred to as the brain of the computer.
Processor - answerAn alternative term used for the central processing unit.
Registers - answerVery small storage locations inside the CPU.
Cache - answerA small amount of memory which is part of the CPU. It stores the data
and instructions, most likely to be needed as it is faster for the CPU to access than
RAM.
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU) - answerThe part of the CPU where all calculations and
logical operations are completed.
Program Counter (PC) - answerA register which stores the memory address of the
instruction which is currently being completed.
Memory Address Register (MAR) - answerA register which stores the memory location
of data which will be needed, or where the data will be stored.
Memory Buffer Register (MBR) - answerA register which stores the data which has
been fetched, or will be sent to, the address stored in the memory address register.
Buses - answerA set of wires used to transport data between components.
Current Instruction Register (CIR) - answerA register which stores the current
instruction being executed.
Accumulator - answerA register which stores the results from the arithmetic logic unit.
Control Unit - answerComponent of the CPU which controls the flow of data around the
CPU, communication between the CPU and input and output devices, and decodes and
executes instructions.
Clock - answerComponent of the CPU which regulates the speed at which instructions
are completed.
