take a MILLION Americans 100yrs to Conquer it.
20NOV1943 , M landed and secured the island with in 72hrs, but paid a Heavy Price in doing
so bc of an Extended Reef, Landing craft could not cross it and the M were Offloaded
hundreds of yards from the beaches. This lead to Heavy Losses from enemy fire.
Additionally many M drowned while attempting to wade Ashore

Hollend M "Howlin MAD" Mariana Smith - ansDue to the needs for Airfields by the Air
Force and Advanced bases for the Navy, the Marianas were Invaded. Landings on the islands

During JUN/JUL of 1943, (LTGEN) HOLLAND M "Howlin' Mad" Smith led a combined
invasion force of M and Soldiers that totaled over 136,000. This was the greatest # of Troops
up to that time to operate in the field under M command.
