Topic 8 DQ 1
How are premarital domestic violence and marital domestic violence associated?
What are the key red flags that domestic violence is occurring? How might you
support the family in obtaining help?
Hello class and professor,
The textbook identifies three different types of domestic violence that are common between
couples; these types are intimate terrorism, violence resistance, and situational couple violence
(Olson et al., 2022). According to the textbook, domestic violence has a three stage cycle
which includes a tension-building phase, an explosion phase, and a loving or honeymoon phase
(Olson et al., 2022). Based oof of this and all the research saying that children repeat what they
see, premarital and marital violence are very similar expect for when they happen and some of
the finer details of the signs of them happening. The red flags of domestic violence can be
grouped into ten main groups, which are jealousy, intimidation, domination, fault finding,
possessive, disrespect, controlling, entitled, hypocrite, and isolation (Waypoint Services, 2023).
The red flags of dating violence are very similar and include things like checking their partners
phone, extreme jealousy, temper issues, isolating, and controlling (Waypoint Services, 2023).
These could look different depending on how long the relationship has been going on and what
type of violence it is. Getting the victim help would, in my mind, depend on how long they
have been with the abuser, what the abuser was/is like, and the kind of abuse faced. To help
someone that is mostly going through psychological/mental/emotional abuse would look
different than helping someone mostly experiencing physical abuse.
