Part 1 (15 points): Voltage Divider Design
What do you think the purpose of the diode rectifier is in this design?

It prevents the current to flow in the wrong direction especially when the designer makes a mistake in
putting the wrong connection of positive and negative voltage.

Connect the load resistor (RL = 1k Ohms) to your solar panel and measure the voltage and current
the solar panel can produce over different light conditions. (Reminder – voltage is measured with the
multimeter in parallel with the resistor and current is measured with the multimeter in series with the
resistor.)
Hint: divide the range of your Solar Panel voltage and pick 4 different voltage values; the highest of
which corresponds to the Full Sunlight, while the lowest to the Lab Light.

The CEO of Sparky Solar, Melanie Waters, has told you that the design criteria (in order of
importance) are: 1. Availability, 2. Cost, 3. Accuracy. When designing the voltage divider circuit,
which set of resistors will you use (1, 2, or 3) and why?

According to the criteria, the best set of resistors to be used is Set 2. First important criteria is
availability, which there are only two sets that are “available now” and with those sets (2 and 3), the
next important criteria is cost, set 2 is $2.00/each and set 3 is $3.00/each, clearly, set 2 is cheaper. And
lastly, third criteria is accuracy, which compared to set 3, set to has a better accuracy.

Select R1 and R2 to ensure that the value of A1 does not exceed 5V for all light conditions (show your
work here and mention the maximum voltage your solar panel is capable of outputting):

Full light condition should be used for considering R1 and R2 to maintain the accuracy when for VA1
< 5V.

If you replaced your solar panel with another one that is of a Max voltage for
higher voltage, what is the maximum voltage that the solar panel  R1: 34.28V
can output without exceeding the power rating of your selected R1
and R2? Assume your resistors are ¼ W resistors. (If your solar  R2: 37.75V
panel can exceed this voltage value, you will need to reselect your R1
and R2 values).  Vsolar (V): 15.81V

calculate the maximum power dissipated by your load resistor (RL). Assuming your resistors to be ¼
