Basic life support terminology
Abdominal thrusts - ANS-Maneuver to relieve airway obstructions in adults and children
ACLS - ANS-Advanced cardiac life support
Advanced airway - ANS-Intubation tube is in place that leads directly to lungs
AED - ANS-Automated external defibrillator
Agonal breaths - ANS-Occasional shallow gasps which do not supply adequate oxygen intake,
occurs for seconds free cardiac arrest
ALS - ANS-Advanced life support
Back slaps/chest thrusts - ANS-Maneuver to relieve airway obstructions in infants
BVM - ANS-Bag value mask, breathing device used by 2 or more rescuers to provide ventilation
Cardiac arrest - ANS-Death, no heart beat, no breathing
Chest recoil - ANS-Process of allowing chest wall to return to normal position after each
compression
Compression rate - ANS-Rate or speed of compressions delivered over 1 minute
Cyanosis - ANS-Bluish discoloration of the skin caused by a lack of oxygen
Defibrillation - ANS-A shock to the heart to stop chaotic electrical activity
EMS - ANS-Emergency medical services
Esophagus - ANS-Tube that leads to stomach
Gastric inflammation - ANS-Term used for stomach inflating due to delivering rescue breaths to
forcefully and/or quickly
Head tilt/chin lift - ANS-Maneuver used to open the airway when no trauma is suspected
Intubation - ANS-The act of inserting an advanced airway (I.e. Endotrachial tube)
Jaw thrust - ANS-Maneuver used to open airway when trauma is suspected
