Basic Life Support
ACLS - ANS-Advanced cardiac life support

What stage does ACLS occur after? - ANS-Resuscitation

CPR - ANS-Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

AED - ANS-Automated external defibrillator

What is the algorithm for CPR? - ANS-1. Check for scene safety -- approach victim if safe
2. Check victim for responsiveness -- tap both shoulders and shout " are you okay"
3. If no response, activate emergency response system or call 911
-If alone, put it on speaker, tell name & location
-If with others, designate a person to call 911 and get AED
4. Check vital signs: smooth breathing (look for chest rise) and pulse simultaneously --> assess
5. If no breathing & no pulse, CPR on hard, flat surface
-30 chest compressions:2 breaths for 5 cycles/2 mins
6. Continue CPR until emergency help or AED arrives

How to assess vital signs, and what to do in response? - ANS-1. No breathing & pulse -->
cardiac emergency --> CPR
2. No breathing but pulse --> respiratory emergency --> rescue breathing
3. Breathing & pulse --> another emergency/reason for unconsciousness --> put victim in rescue
position
4. No pulse but breathing --> impossible --> recheck

How to check for heartbeat/pulse in children? - ANS-Brachial pulse

How to check for heartbeat/pulse in adults? - ANS-Carotid pulse

What is the best resuscitation method? - ANS-AED

What is the most cause of cardiac arrest? - ANS-Arrhythmia, or abnormal heart rhythm,
especially ventricular fibrillation

What is the adult chain of survival? - ANS-1. Immediate recognition of cardiac arrest (no pulse +
smooth breathing) & activation of emergency response system
2. Early CPR
3. Rapid AED/defibrillation - Turn on, follow instructions of AED for shock or no shock
4. Effective advanced life support
-EMS team arrives and takes over
-ROSC = return of spontaneous circulation, i.e. person returns back to life
