ES 347 Final Exam (FMS)
Functional Movement Screening (FMS) - Answer-•- is a screening test just to identify where problems
MAY be
•Watching how individuals move through 7 movements to assess movement pattern dysfunction,
weaknesses, and asymmetries
•Measuring mobility + stability
•FMS IS NOT A DIAGNOSTIC TEST
•Not a test for already injured individuals or people in pain
•Can be used to say "something is wrong here," NOT figure out what is wrong
•If the individual experiences pain or major dysfunctions are seen, you should suggest the individual see
a medical professional - Answer-What is FMS not?
Scope of Practice - Answer-•The services that a qualified health professional is deemed competent to
perform, and permitted to undertake - in keeping with the terms of their professional license
•Identify asymmetries/dysfunctions/weaknesses
•Assess risk of injury - Answer-Why do we use FMS?
Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, Inline Lunge, Shoulder Mobility (Shoulder Clearing), Active Straight Leg Raise,
Trunk Stability Push-Up (Spinal Extension Clearing), Rotary Stability (Spinal Flexion Clearing) - Answer-
What are the movements for FMS?
, 1.Have the individual complete the movement
1.Verbal instructions first
2.Ask if they have pain during the movement
3.Give no additional instructions or feedback after seeing the movement
2.If the individual is unable to complete the movement or does so with insufficient technique, have
them do the modified version
3.Score the subject with a 3,2,1, or 0 (next slide)
4.Repeat on other side when appropriate - Answer-How to Score FMS?
3 - Answer-Completes the movement, unmodified, without pain and with correct form
2 - Answer-Completes modified movement OR form is compromised
1 - Answer-Form is insufficient, criteria are not met
0 - Answer-Subject feels pain, unable to complete the movement
Clearing Tests - Answer-•3 - - to detect pain/impingement that could be exacerbated by completion of
the movement
•Shoulder - -
•Spinal extension - -
•Spinal flexion - -
•Should be done BEFORE the movement they are associated with
•If subject experiences pain, score +
