BEFORE YOU'RE GONE
I could feel my brain pounding against my head “ugh” I groaned softly , everything was
so blurry where on earth was I?......... I tried to fully open my eyes but the rays of sun
coming from the window was blinding me. I tried sitting up but each movement of my
body sent a painful throb down my spine. My breathing felt irregular as if I was
breathing in something, and it was uncomfortable. I closed my eyes, and gathered up all
the strength and I moved up the bed slightly to get a better view of where I was, by now
my eyes had adjusted to the light. I slowly took in my surroundings, there was a small
black seat next to my bed, the windows were white humongous , and a big screen next to
me, I was attached to a ventilator, and some beeping machines to my right. Oh I’m in a
hospital. But why?....... Did I fall? I closed my eyes trying to recall what happened but
my mind was blank, as I was trying to regain my thoughts. A middle aged lady opened
the door, she was staring at her feet scuffling them around like she had no idea where she
was going just roaming mindlessly. She had a dull face, and big circles around her brown
eyes, like she hadn’t slept for days or even weeks, her skin was dry and wrinkled. If she
wasn’t walking I’d have mistaken her for a ghost. It took a while for her to notice me but
as she lifted her head up, she gasped, and her eyes brighten up like a kid given candy
,2.Before You’re Gone
“NURSE NURSE” she screamed “ SHE’S AWAKE SHE’S AWAKE” she turned back
at me and drooped to the floor, tears rolled down her eyes as she stared straight up at me
“you’re awake” she whispered, the intensity of sadness in her eyes broke me, and I felt
the urge to comfort her, I tried to lift my hands, but the pain in my hands was too much
to bear, it felt like a surging knife was running through my hand across my body, a
doctor, and a man raced through the door with the exact expression as the lady’s face.
The man walked to the lady on the floor and picked her up, he whispered something in
her ears, and hugged her. I was glad she was comforted, the man looked at me “hey baby
girl you’re back” he said in a trembling voice his eyes were saying a lot of things to me , I
turned my face to the doctor, feeling an overwhelming surge of emotions and confusion
with everything that was going on. “Ms.Briar” the doctor said, “me?” I replied softly, I
was surprised at my voice. I didn't think I was able to talk. “Ms.Briar do you remember
exactly how you got here”
“Um no, not really did I fall?” I asked, I noticed the lady flinched and the man held her
closer. Was that the wrong answer? The doctor then walked over to the couple “do you
know who they are?” I scan my brain for anything, any sign, nothing. I looked at them
for a minute but they didn’t look familiar at all, but seeing the distressed was hurting my
heart “umm sorry are we related?” I asked.
, 3.Before You’re Gone
“Briar these are your parents” the doctor said I looked at them confused , why couldn’t I
remember? The doctor sat down on a stool, and faced the couple who were supposed to
be my parents. “ I’m sorry to say but your daughter has Retrograde Amnesia I can’t tell
you right now if it’s permanent but she has to stay here for a few days”. The lady looked
at me and said “ do do you remember brandy sweetie” I looked down at the hands not
knowing what to say, I then took a few deep breath and looked back at her, this time she
had a huge smile on her face, “it’s fine Bri, you should rest now we’re just glad to have
you back ”. The parents walked out the door and I was left with the doctor “I advise you
don’t stress too much, just sit and relax, these four days will be over in a jiff, and you’ll
be back home ok” He smiled as he starts to walk out the door, before I could stop myself
I jumped out the hospital bed and reached for his jacket, I look down at my arms, huh I
guess I could move now “is something wrong Ms. Briar” the doctor gave me a look that
said - madam-please-get-back- to -bed-or-I’ll-lose my job. I stood upright, from my
flamingo stance and cleared my throat “um who’s Brandy” his pleasant face turned stone
cold and I regretted asking the question. “ I prefer you know nothing about him, and it’s
best you can’t remember him, you just came back from a coma, so I would hate to put a
big burden on you” he removed my hands from his jacket and walked away, I slowly
