Nursing portfolio
1. Create a professional mission statement (suggested length of 1 paragraph)
that includes the following:
a representation of your career goals, your aspirations, and how you
want to move forward with your career
an overview of where you would like to focus your time and energies
within the profession
“My mission is to provide the highest standards in the practice of nursing and to promote safety
and public health, one patient at a time. As a registered nurse, I will work to provide compassionate,
excellent health care to the underserved community, transforming the well-being of those in need.” My
mission statement will serve as the foundation of my nursing career. I am guided by a moral belief that
all nurses must strive to give optimal care to patients, whether they are an individual, group, or
community. Throughout my nursing career, I will continue to deliver excellent care with the
continuously evolving science of nursing and changes within the healthcare system. I will demonstrate
excellent nursing care that will foster positive outcomes within the community
a) Reflect on how your professional mission statement will help guide you
throughout your nursing career.
2. Complete a professional summary (suggested length of 3 pages) that
includes the following:
a. Explain how the specific artifacts or completed work or both in your
portfolio represent you as a learner and a healthcare professional.
With each course at WGU, my skills and knowledge continued to grow every day. This is
attributable to the fact that the course content primarily focused on current trends in the industry,
community concepts, theory, research, leadership, therapeutic interventions, and healthcare policy. For
this reason, I did not have difficulties working as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nurse because I was able
to demonstrate the professionalism and competency that I gained as a WGU student. The attachments
in this portfolio prove the skills that I have learned and used to achieve my professional goals.
One of my completed works in this portfolio (task 1) depicts me as a learner and a healthcare
professional. Leadership and professional image experience task 1 gave me the opportunity to utilize my
leadership skills in investigating the challenges that characterize the NICU and find a solution. Also, as a

learner and a healthcare professional, I have used my knowledge to assess, diagnose a problem, and
implement a solution to benefit my unit. WGU BSN program has also helped me in enhancing my
competence as a professional nurse. Through the assigned courses and assignments, I gained adequate
knowledge of what it takes to become a competent and successful nurse. Furthermore, the courses and
assignments have not only enhanced my competence as a nurse but have also made me a better person.
In fact, I have attained an exceptional understanding of what a nurse should be capable of and my
perspective of a nurse’s morals has improved drastically. The attachments that I have selected to include
display a part of the processes that I have undertaken to realize my educational goals.
b. Discuss how the specific artifacts in your portfolio represent your
professional strengths.
My professional strength appears in my role as a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Registered
Nurse. I have worked with adults for a few years as a Dialysis Acute RN, but I found my passion in
providing care for the preemies. In my Evidence-Based Practice task 1 paper, I researched the
importance of skin-to-skin contact in the NICU. After discussing the findings of my research paper with
the unit Director and the Manager, the unit in conjunction with other NICU’s all over the country (the
United States) decided to improve the time spent with Kangaroo-Care. This demonstrates my
professional strength as a leader and ability to collaborate with other healthcare personnel in improving
the healthcare system and the quality of care provided to preemie patients.
c. Discuss challenges you encountered during the progression of your
program.
i) Explain how you overcame these challenges.
It is undeniable that I have faced multiple challenges during my BSN program. My major
challenge is juggling between family, personal and school life. My work-related challenge is starting a
new job as a NICU Nurse that requires 5 days a week in training. As a newly appointed NICU Nurse, I am
also required to obtain some certificates in the first few months of my job placement. My personal
related challenge is being a full-time mom for three beautiful daughters. Two of my kids are very busy
with sports that require being out of the house 3 or more days a week. My school challenge is finding

time to finish assignments in a timely manner. However, I believe my biggest challenge is striking a
balance between school work, my work schedule and family time. Nonetheless, as a nurse professional, I
understand that every challenge has got a solution. Therefore, to overcome the earlier mentioned
challenges, I rely on friends and family so much. For instance, my kids at times are forced to carpool with
their friends to practice. My husband too had to change his work schedule to accommodate the kids’
needs when I am busy with school work. My mom came from California to watch my kids so I can have
time to work on school projects.
d. Explain how your coursework helped you meet each of the nine nursing
program outcomes.
Arguably, the BSN course curriculum at the Western Governor University has taught and helped
me in achieving the program outcome. The program outcomes are as detailed
Effective Communication: Most of the courses include a performance project which was helpful in
improving my writing skills tremendously. My communication skills were also enhanced because in the
leadership course, I gained significant insights on how to present a problem or an issue to the unit
director and take a step forward to correct it.
Clinical Reasoning: My clinical reasoning skills were improved as a result of the knowledge that I gained
during the evidence-based practice assignments. During my research, I learned the importance of skin-
to-skin care and the clinical reasoning behind it. Now I feel more comfortable in my clinical reasoning
because I use it on a daily basis as a NICU Nurse.
Accountability: I often demonstrate my proficiency and accountability in my work by ensuring patient’s
safety. I also adhere to professional and legal standard as per my hospital policy and the state board of
nursing.
Synthesize of knowledge: I utilized the knowledge I gained throughout the BSN program to showcase
my clinical, empirical, and theoretical knowledge especially during the community health course.
Compassionate: As a NICU nurse, I provide care to a variety of patients from different cultures and
backgrounds. I also focus on providing compassionate and patient-centered care to patients and their
families.

Leadership: I have applied the leadership skills acquired during my leadership course into practice. I
developed a plan to improve communication skills between doctors and nurses in the Neonatal ICU as
discussed in my leadership experience task 1.
Professional Collaboration: Quality and safety are very important in the health care especially when you
are dealing with sick infants. I thus, work directly with the disciplinary team to formulate a quality check
at the beginning of every shift to ensure a safe environment for our patients and families.
Genomics Knowledge: the completion of Genomics and Genetics through the American Museum of
Natural History has given me the knowledge I need to understand Congenital Anomalies in the NICU.
Information Technology: I have applied the knowledge I learned during my courses to safely access
websites for liable and legitimate information. I have learned to better access the electronic health
records while protecting patient’s privacy according to HIPPA
Note: Refer to the attachment “Nursing Conceptual Model.”
e. Analyze how you fulfilled the following roles during your program:
scientist
detective
manager of the healing environment
As a detective, a nurse is expected to utilize his/her clinical imagination alongside nursing
science to identify deviations and changes from what is expected so that adverse outcomes can be
controlled or prevented. As scientists, nurses are expected to take part in scientific inquiry with the sole
purpose of critiquing, implementing, and disseminating evidence as well as informing healthcare
decisions to influence practice (Lynch & Duval, 2011). Lastly, as managers of the healing environment, it
is the role of the nurses to advocate, coordinate, and create interdisciplinary and respectful
environments that acknowledges the dignity of patients and their families experience in addition to
promoting their optimal well-being. During my program at the WGU, I mastered the roles of a nurse as a
scientist, Detective and Manager of Healing environment as detailed
My role as a Scientist During the program, multiple courses required me to apply the role of the nurse
as a scientist. In the NICU, we faced an issue of ineffective communication between doctors and nurses.
The unit implemented nurse and doctors rounds at a certain time of the day that did not work very well
hence undermining its intended outcome. Working with Disciplinary Team, I critiqued the current
process and implemented a better and effective way of improving communication between doctors and
nurses
My role as a Detective As a NICU nurse, I practice my detective skills on a daily basis. Leadership and
professional image experiences task 1 provided me with an example of my detective skills in the NICU. I
