BHS-330 Discussion Responses Topics 4-6
Topic 4 DQ 1

Assessment Description: Describe your personal communication style including verbal and
nonverbal characteristics. How will your communication style influence your work as a
paraprofessional.

According to Princeton University, there are four main types of communication styles,
which includes passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive (Understanding Your
Communication Style, n.d.). The passive type tends to avoid eye contact and is more of "go
with the flow" type while the aggressive type tends to cross their arms and fight for what they
want (Understanding Your Communication Style, n.d.). The cross between these two is the
passive-aggressive which after reading the website is exactly what you think of when someone
is being passive-aggressive like snide remarks or spreading rumors or doing spiteful things.
The last one, assertive, is kind of the good medium to be because it involves eye contact and
actively interacting and expressing yourself in the conversation (Understanding Your
Communication Style, n.d.).

Personally, I try to have an assertive style of communication, however it is very easy for them
to overlap in any interaction a person can have in the day to day. I also think this varies
drastically based on culture and context. For example, our textbook gave examples of how
some cultures find it disrespectful to look people in the eyes. I think nonverablly, I tend to mix
between assertive and passive. I can maintain eye contact, but I often feel like it is unnecessary
to be giving someone full eye contact. I also feel obligated to make eye contact when talking
with people because growing up my parents took it as a sign of lying to them.

I think knowing one's style of communication as well as the different styles can drastically
change how a therapy session goes. Knowing when it is appropriate to use each style would
change how well certain therapy aspects work with a client as well as the rapport a
paraprofessional would build with client.

Assessment Description: Provide an example of at least one Asian culture communication style
and at least one Latinx culture communication style.

An example of Asian culture communication is filial piety, which relates to how
interconnected one's actions are to their family welfare as well as the levels of respect to elders
and parents that children are expected to show (Hays & Erford, 2018). This is important to
keep in mind when working with the Asian-American community because they are very family
and collective culture based so involving their family could help them more so than someone
from an individualistic culture. An example of Latinx culture communication is familismo,
which is similar in some ways to filial piety, however, familismo involves the family as well as
the immediate community, like close friends and religious godparents (Hays & Erford, 2018).
Similarly to the Asian-American community, the Latinx community would find benefit in
including those close to the client in a manner to benefit all parties. I think with both
communities it is important for a behavioral health professional to keep in mind that generally
neither community turns to the outside world or strangers for help with anything so when a
member of these communities comes to the professional for help, they should do every thing in
their power to ensure the client feels comfortable continuing to seek help.

Topic 5 DQ 1

Assessment Description: Review the explanations of acculturation and enculturation in the Sun
et al. article, "Acculturation and Enculturation as Predictors of Psychological Help-Seeking
Attitudes (HSAs) Among Racial and Ethnic Minorities: A Meta-Analytic Investigation." How
does multicultural adaptation impact those seeking behavioral health services? What can
professionals do to help diverse clients get the services they need?

Multicultural adaptation can impact those seeking behavioral health services because
the cultures a person adapts to could shape how they view behavioral health and therapy. From
looking at different sources, I understand multicultural adaptation to be similar to a blending of
cultures. For example, immigrants that come to a country would open up and accept a few
beliefs or values from the country they went to while holding on their old culture and beliefs. I
also think that acculturation, enculturation, and multicultural adaptation is a non-linear cycle of
development, each generation that is in the new country would take and give beliefs until there
