BHS-350: Reflection Question

Directions: Read the following case scenario and complete the reflection questions below. Be
sure to reference a minimum of two scholarly sources to support your answers.

Janessa is a 15-year-old client in foster care. She currently lives with her older sister,
Victoria (29) and her wife Karsen (28). There are no other children in the home at this time.
Janessa’s mom is currently incarcerated due to drug use, and her dad is currently unemployed
but working to gain custody of Janessa once he can provide for her. They have been in contact
throughout her life, but do not see each other often as they live in different states. Janessa has
always done well in school but is struggling with motivation and maintaining her grades. She
is friendly and has a core group of supportive friends.
Janessa recently confronted her sister, telling her she’s been hearing things she doesn’t
believe others can hear. Sometimes she hears little sounds, like creaking in a house, and
sometimes she hears voices whispering but can’t make out what they say. She has also been
seeing shadows moving around corners and in dim lighting. Victoria is concerned with these
symptoms as she has heard other family members talk about an aunt who had similar symptoms
and worries about how to effectively support Janessa at this time.
Upon interviewing Janessa and family, you find that her symptoms are beyond your
scope of practice. You decide to refer her to another provider but are not sure of best, evidence-
based practices that will most effectively treat and support Janessa and her family. Do some
research to appropriately refer this client and her family for wraparound services, then fill out
the attached questions and referral form.

Question 1
• Explain who should be involved in Janessa’s treatment. Justify your reasoning.
Answer Here:
In the context of Janessa's care, her sister needs to be the primary guardian. Since the sister's
wife stays with them, I would recommend including her in the care as well, but the sister will
ultimately choose this. The sister and the court would have the last say over whether or not
Janessa's parents got involved. While it is not necessary, it would be beneficial to talk about
the symptoms with the parents in order to learn more about the background of the family. In
terms of school, it could be good to get in touch with Janessa's counselor so that she is
prepared and accessible in case Janessa needs support.
Question 2
• Based on her clinical presentation, research and explain three modalities that
will support the client’s specific symptoms.
