2. Health is a multifaceted, ongoing process.
How does the concept of health relate to me as a nurse?
1. As nurses, we can't use our own judgment. The individual
knows themselves better than anyone else.
2. Ask yourself 'does the patient consider themselves healthy?'
and investigate why or why not.
3. Nurses should be aware of their own person definitions and
views of health and appreciate that other people have their own
individual perceptions.
How is health defined?
There are multiple definitions despite the fact that health is
'individually defined'.
How might the definition 'health is the absence of any disease or
impairment' be right or wrong?
1. The medical professionals are the ones declaring if an
individual is healthy.
2. This doesn't take into account how an individual feels about
his or her state and suggests that their input into what the
paradigm of health is, is not relevant.
3. One dimensional.

,How might the definition 'health is a state that allows the
individual to adequately cope with daily life' be right or wrong?
They might have a disease, not adequately cope with everyday
life however still classify themselves as healthy because
holistically they feel 'ok'.
How might the definition 'a state of complete physical, mental
and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity (WHO) 1946' be right or wrong?
1. Counterproductive.
2. It declares that people with diseases and disabilities are ill.
3. There is no way to measure 'complete'.
What is an example of a personal definition of health?
1. A 72 year old takes antihypertensive medications to treat high
blood pressure. She plays lawn bowls once a week, is a member
of a local golf club and travels every year.
Why is the WHO definition of health most widely referred to?
1. Addresses concern for the individual as a total person.
2. Places health in the context of their environment. People's
lives and therefore their health are affected by everything they
interact with.
What things should a definition of health include?
1. The ability to adapt to the changing needs of an individual
overtime. (you might be healthy then ill, then healthy again)
2. Management of conditions and illnesses (treat, care and
improve)

,3. Engage in actions that will promote physical, mental and
social well being (view the person holistically)
4. Does absence of a disease really mean you are healthy?
(question for the individual)
