What is the concept of health?
1. The concept of health is not uniform, health can be viewed
differently.
2. Health is a multifaceted, ongoing process.
How does the concept of health relate to me as a nurse?
1. As nurses, we can't use our own judgment. The individual
knows themselves better than anyone else.
2. Ask yourself 'does the patient consider themselves healthy?'
and investigate why or why not.
3. Nurses should be aware of their own person definitions and
views of health and appreciate that other people have their own
individual perceptions.
How is health defined?
There are multiple definitions despite the fact that health is
'individually defined'.

1. The medical professionals are the ones declaring if an
individual is healthy.
2. This doesn't take into account how an individual feels about
his or her state and suggests that their input into what the
paradigm of health is, is not relevant.
3. One dimensional.

They might have a disease, not adequately cope with everyday
life however still classify themselves as healthy because
holistically they feel 'ok'.

infirmity (WHO) 1946' be right or wrong?
1. Counterproductive.
2. It declares that people with diseases and disabilities are ill.
3. There is no way to measure 'complete'.
What is an example of a personal definition of health?
1. A 72 year old takes antihypertensive medications to treat high
blood pressure. She plays lawn bowls once a week, is a member
of a local golf club and travels every year.
Why is the WHO definition of health most widely referred to?
1. Addresses concern for the individual as a total person.
2. Places health in the context of their environment. People's
lives and therefore their health are affected by everything they
interact with.
What things should a definition of health include?
1. The ability to adapt to the changing needs of an individual
overtime. (you might be healthy then ill, then healthy again)
2. Management of conditions and illnesses (treat, care and
improve)

social well being (view the person holistically)

individuals have a responsibility for our own choices,
behaviours and lifestyle.

Highly influenced by our physical, social and cultural
environments.

A state of wellbeing, individually constructed dynamic
relationships between people and their everyday environments
and how they maintain purposeful connections in the social,
