Writing Response 7

In what ways were the 1920s a “step forward?”
-During 1920, cultural changes have taken place. Teenagers for example can go out and
socialize. Women became more expressive about their sexuality that this liberation led them to
be called “flappers”. They became liberated to the point where they went to the movies alone
without being escorted by a man, now it is socially acceptable to wear their hemlines above the
knee and listened and danced to jazz.
-1920s or the Roaring Twenties’ opened more stores for consumerism to explode all over the
country. The prosperity gave the country the new face.

In what ways were the 1920s a “step backward?”
-Despite the “liberation”, 1920 still had restricted rights.
-Not only that but political corruption (The Teapot Dome Scandal), economic recession, labor
unrest and racism existed in the dark street alleys of our country during this era.
(Source: 2.1.2 1920s- Restricted Rights Lecture slide 3/58)
-Racism was rampant during 1920, Americans did not like being integrated with different race
and class because they believe that there were only few available jobs positions yet there are
numbers of workers willing to take the job. And Americans want the job positions only available
for “Americans” only. (Source: 2.1.2 1920s Restricted Rights Lecture slide 7/58)
