1.2 Reflect on each role and note 2 classroom activities relevant to each role:
1. Learning mediator: As a learning mediator, I will show sound knowledge of the curriculum/subject content in the
classroom. Create a healthy learning environment that encourages critical thinking, adapt teaching strategies and
methods to suit the different needs of learners.
2. Interpreter and designer of learning programmes and materials: Prepare and design lessons in an interesting
manner eg audiovisual. Create worksheets, design study materials (textual and visual resources) interpretation of
textbooks in the classroom. It is also the educator's job to select, sequence and pace the learning so that it is applicable
to all students.
3. Leader administrator and manager: Manage classroom administration (daily register,timetable,classwork. Marking of
books and assessments. Working with colleagues on decision making processes. Taking care and keeping track of any
money (finances) that come into the classroom. Decision making within the classroom and participating in school;
decision-making. Help and support fellow colleagues.
4. Scholar , researcher and lifelong learner: Making sure you are up to date with advances in technology, be computer
and information literate eg doing a course in Microsoft Excel to upgrade your skills. Continuing your academic
studies.Reading studies and researching new topics and ideas to implement in the classroom. The educator needs to
achieve ongoing personal,academic, occupational and professional growth.
5. Community,citizenship and pastoral role: HIV/AIDS education for students. Taking on a pastoral role if for example a
child is going through a parental divorce or loss of a family member. Behave in an ethical manner and hold firm to the
democratic values and constitution of South Africa. Acting as a mentor, building sound relationships with students and
parents (supportive role).
6. Assessor: Create formative and summative assessments (class tests and exams, practical assessments. Keep a thorough
record of all the assessments. Understand if the concepts have been consolidated and understood by learners and if
there is a need for intervention.
7. Learning area/subject/phase/discipline specialist: Teacher will have in depth knowledge of the specialist subject.
Decorate your classroom appropriately, if you teach history for example you can have a poster of the SA flag and Nelson
Mandela etc. As a subject head you would oversee that particular grade and/subject and act as moderator, see that all
requirements for that specific subject has been met as per CAPS specifications. The Head of discipline will be in charge of
all disciplinary issues and have the knowledge and skills to fulfill this positioon.
