QUESTIONS
1. A South African university was facing significant employment relations challenges,
with faculty members from different departments experiencing tension due to conflicting
priorities and communication styles. Administrative staff, for instance, reported low
morale and high turnover, citing poor communication and lack of professional
development opportunities. As an industrial- organisational (I/O) psychologist, you were
consulted to address these issues.
Critically discuss how you could contribute to the employment relations at this
institution. First explain the main employment relations issues facing this
university and then discuss your potential contributions.
According to Ferreira (2005), South Africa’s comprehensive legal framework, shaped by
its historical context, emphasizes redress, equity, and structured labour relations. This
framework includes legislation such as the Labour Relations Act (LRA), Basic Conditions
of Employment Act (BCEA), and Employment Equity Act (EEA), which collectively aim to
balance power dynamics, promote fairness, and regulate workplace practices. The
university’s challenges must be addressed within this legal and socio-political context to
ensure compliance and foster a harmonious employment environment.
Main Employment Relations Issues at the University
Conflicting priorities and communication styles between departments create silos,
undermining collaboration. This reflects a failure in informal labour relations (e.g., trust,
communication) as outlined in the multidimensional model of labour relations.
