1.1. The Concept of “Ecology of Knowledge”
The concept of an “ecology of knowledge” refers to the recognition and coexistence of diverse
forms of knowledge, including indigenous, local, spiritual, and scientific knowledge systems.
According to Smith (2012:214), cognitive justice is impossible without accepting the value of
different ways of knowing. In the context of post-colonial Africa, this concept challenges the
dominance of Eurocentric epistemologies that were imposed during colonialism and continue
to influence education, governance, and development today.
During colonial rule, Western knowledge systems were privileged, while African worldviews,
practices, and histories were dismissed as backward or irrelevant (Seroto et al., 2020). The
