• What do you think about Whitey Basson (or you) earning ZAR 620 000 000.00
I think it is morally wrong for anyone to earn that much money
• Why do you think this?
With the unemployment rate that South Africa is facing, it is definitely not wise for such a big
company to pay an individual this big salary, these company can use this money to pay him
(CEO) and increase their company in employing the unemployed graduates that have finished
their studies and are frustrated by the unemployed statistics of South Africa which will degrees
the unemployment rate and improve productivity of the company as they will be having more
staff to work with, also degrees youth that are engaging in illegal activities such as the usage of
drugs (cocaine). This will also motivate other student that are still studying to complete their
studies in order to be qualified and employable which will decrease the Mist that South
Africans are having that even thou they are study they don’t get employed upon obtaining
their qualifications so they might as well not study.
Referring to the student’s argument mentioned above:
Premises 1:
The student first argument is an explicit argument by referring to “pay an individual this big
salary”, therefore stating that the amount of income is unfair and not “wise”.
Premises2:
The student further base his argument on an implicit premises by stating; “in employing the
unemployed graduates… will increase productivity”
Premises 3:
The student further argues it will “decrease the youth that engage in illegal activities such as
the use of drugs”. Stating an implicit and not so obvious premises.
Premises 4:
The student further elaborate on the matter that increasing salaries it will “motivate”
students to complete their degrees in order to be employable.
In conclusion, the students’ argument is based on the fact that the amount of money
received by one person is unfair and unwise. The argument states that the money should be
used to create more employment and this will result in a better community and economy
status.
