→ Can act as a parasite themselves, be a vector for parasites, or manipulate parasites in a
way
➢ Class Arachnida-ticks, mites, spiders

➢ Class Crustacea-crabs, lobsters, copepods
➢ Similar general structure for all arthropods
→ Bilateral symmetry
→ Segmented body
→ Hard exoskeleton(support and protection; allows for organization of internal organs)
→ Jointed legs
→ Many pairs of limbs(minimum of 6 usually)


➢ Arthropods as parasites-ectoparasites
→ Protelean parasites(only parasitic for part of life cycle)
➢ Arthropods as vectors-micropredators


➢ Protelean-lives parasitically as larva, free-living as an adult
→ Myiases of humans(infected by fly larvae)
➢ Human botfly anchors onto human skin using spikes
→ Eggs laid on human directly or via vector
→ Most mammalian species can be infected


➢ Vector species typically within class Insecta
→ Order Hemiptera(bugs)
➢ Triatoma infestans is a vector of Trypanosoma cruzi(Chagas’ diseases)
➢ Kissing bugs-painless bite, usually bite around the mouth

→ Synanthropic-species that are more commonly found where humans are also found
➢ Dogs, cats, rats can act as reservoir host
➢ Sylvatic reservoirs-opossums, bats, squirrels, guinea pigs, etc.
➢ Covering cracked surfaces with paint or concrete can help prevent spread


➢ Bed bugs-Cimex lectularis
➢ Eggs very small, but visible
