HUM-102-15173-M01 Self, Society, and Humanities Module 1 notes
What are the Humanities?
● The humanities bring together a variety of disciplines, including history, cultural studies,
science, and the arts. Rather than focusing on each idea individually, the humanities
draw on these disciplines to understand how individuals and cultures make meaning
through creative expression.
● Experiencing the world through the perspectives of the humanities teaches us not only
about each other but also about ourselves.
● Although the humanities weave these disciplines together, it is important to have a
general understanding of each perspective:
1. Historical: events, people, and places in the past
2. Cultural: beliefs, values, and practices of a group and society
3. Scientific: observable, measurable, explanations of phenomena
4. Artistic: making, creating, and designing creative works
● Disciplines of humanities include the arts, literature, music, history, philosophy, theology,
religion, languages, and media. They are often closely connected with social science
sub disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, and psychology.
